I love this advertisement from the turn of the 20th century. Only 100 years ago, people administered syrup to their toddlers containing:
“…morphin sulphate, chloroform, morphine hydrochloride, codeine, heroin, powdered opium, cannabis indica…”
What seems like a shocking health product now was accepted without question at the time. This illustrates the ever evolving nature of medicine and of our knowledge as healers, medical professionals, and patients. I have embraced holistic (or biological) dentistry and brought it to the forefront of my practice, Contemporary Dentistry, because I believe that it’s time for change and I believe now is the time for all of us to think about our systemic health and the impact our mouths have!
The Hippocratic Oath contains this oft quoted line:
“I will prescribe regimens for the good for my patients according to my ability and my judgement and never do harm to anyone.”
Although most dental professionals are striving to help their patients, they are frequently hampered by legislation, insurance companies, and the immovable opinion of the dental establishment. Thus, each patient must become their own healthcare advocate and be proactive about their own treatmetns. I want my patients to understand that their mouths are only one part of their beautiuful living body system and that there are well documented, scientifically proven connections between good oral health and a healthy body. I believe that there is going to be a great detnal paradigm shift as more people become aware of the link between oral health and general well being, aware of the fact that some commonly accepted treatments in the dental office are not abiding by the Oath quoted above. One of the first harmful practices that I gladly removed from my office 20 years ago after learning the truth was amalgam fillings. From there I learned about Neuromuscular Dentistry, Collaborative Medicine, Minimally Invasive Dentistry, saliva analysis, individualized diagnosis, new preventative treatments, and so much more. The process of learning never ends; we cannot afford to be complacent about our knowledge of the body because new information is constantly coming to light. I want to share with you the interesting things I have found and I want to hear what you’re learning as well. Through this blog, my team and I will share relevant articles, instructions, tutorials, photos, videos, and any other information that might help you to understand dentistry a little better and to make the best dental choices for yourself and your family.
