To help meet the needs of all types of patients, we offer several denture options. Learn more about our options to find out which one is best for you.

Full Dentures

If your teeth require extractions, we will first create an initial temporary denture to help you maintain your ability to chew, speak, and smile as you heal. After your gums have completely healed, we will take new impressions to create your permanent dentures with improved fit. These are removable and will likely require adjustments over time.

Partials

If you’re only missing some of your teeth, a partial denture may be a solution for you. If a dental implant isn’t an option for you, partial dentures can help to replace missing teeth. Partials use either a flexible plastic base or a metal framework to hold the teeth in place. By wearing partials, you may prevent your remaining teeth from shifting. You will be able to eat, speak and smile as usual with your new replacement teeth!

Snap-On Dentures

The most secure option for dentures is an implant supported snap-on denture. 3-4 dental implants are placed in the bone and a special denture is created that has corresponding snaps embedded in the plastic. Because the denture snaps into place, you’ll be able to speak clearly and eat without worrying about the denture dislodging. You can laugh and talk freely without worry.

Care Tips

Handle with Care

Dentures are strong enough to withstand the forces of biting and chewing but can be very fragile if you accidentally drop them. It’s important that you handle them with care. One common accident is dropping them in the sink while cleaning them. Place a folded towel under your hands while cleaning, or fill the sink with water.

When your dentures aren’t in your mouth, it’s also important to store them correctly. They need to stay moist, or they’ll dry out and lose their shape. When you go to bed at night, place them in a denture cleanser- soaking solution. Lastly, never place in boiling water as this can warp them.

Rinse After Eating

To keep your replacement teeth fresh and avoid stains, it’s a good idea to rinse them after eating. This is especially important if you notice food working its way under your dentures. Certain foods such
as turmeric, blueberries, or beets can create staining over time, so an easy trick is to swish with a little bit of water when you eat these foods, to keep them from sitting on the denture for long periods.

Dentures FAQ

Can I whiten my dentures?

No. Once dentures stain, it is hard to remove. The best way to keep them bright is to follow these care tips for preventing denture stains: rinse after eating, brush daily, and soak as recommended.

Can I repair my own dentures?

No. If your dentures are damaged, take them to your Rochester NY denture dentist, who will tell you if they can be repaired. Attempting to repair them at home can lead to further damage, poor denture fit, or even introduce toxic substances to your mouth.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

We do not recommend sleeping with dentures in. Sleeping with dentures or wearing them for long periods with no break can lead to the accumulation of bacteria and yeast in your mouth. This can lead to bad odors or oral disease.

Why don’t my dentures fit as they used to?

Once you lose your teeth, your body begins removing the bone that used to support your teeth. Since this is also the bone that supports new replacement teeth, it can lead to poor denture fit. When you notice a loose fit, contact us at Contemporary Dentistry to schedule a “reline” visit. This procedure corrects the fit of your denture by adding material to the inside. For traditional dentures, you might need a reline as often as every six months, especially in the early stages of denture wear.

How long do dentures last?

The longevity depends upon the type of denture, the quality, and your individual patterns of wear. Traditional full dentures tend to last about 5-8 years. Evaluation of the denture is recommended after 5 years as sometimes denture teeth need to be replaced without remaking the entire denture.
