Does the color of your gums make you unhappy? Gums might appear dark if they are unhealthy, but sometimes healthy gums are affected by “hyperpigmentation.”This might make them darker in appearance than you’d like. Fortunately, both these causes of dark gums can be treated. We can treat gum disease to return your gums to a healthy color, but if healthy gums are dark, we offer gum bleaching. This procedure doesn’t actually bleach the gums–it removes pigmentation with a minimally invasive procedure. It’s quick and convenient–taking just one appointment. And it’s almost painless with quick recovery time.
Hyperpigmentation of Gums
Healthy gums can appear darker because they contain more melanin. Melanin is the same dark pigment that causes different skin tones. It’s what your body produces to give you a tan, for example.
Hyperpigmentation is often related to genetics. This includes ethnic background. People of all races can have dark gums, but it’s more likely among people with African, Asian, Mediterranean, or Middle Eastern heritage.
Am I a Candidate for Gum Bleaching?
If you are unhappy with the color of your gums, we can evaluate the cause to see if gum bleaching will help you. As with other cosmetic dentistry, you should have good oral health. Healthy gums and a record of good oral hygiene are a must
If your gums are unhealthy, we can schedule treatment to get them healthy. This might solve your appearance concerns. If not, we can schedule gum bleaching at that time.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Gum bleaching uses a laser to selectively target the melanin in your gums. The laser light is absorbed by the dark-colored melanin, similar to the way dark-colored clothes absorb more heat from the sun. This breaks up the melanin, but doesn’t harm your gums. As a result, the gums become lighter.
How Long Does Gum Bleaching Take?
The procedure is very quick. It can take as little as 30 minutes, and we can complete it in just one visit.
Does Gum Bleaching Hurt?
The procedure causes only minimal discomfort. We use local anesthesia, and most patients report feeling little to no discomfort. For some people, worry about the procedure is far worse than the procedure itself. If you feel anxious, we offer sedation dentistry.
What Is Healing Like?
This procedure requires no downtime. If you wish, you can return to work right after treatment and function normally. After local anesthesia wears off, you might experience some discomfort and soreness for a couple of days. Most people aren’t bothered enough to want to take over-the-counter pain relievers, but you can if you want to.
What Is the Cost of the Procedure?
The cost of the procedure varies depending on how involved the procedure will be for you. We may be able to offer the procedure for as little as $700, but we will give you a detailed quote during your consultation before you agree to the procedure.
Is Gum Bleaching Covered By Dental Insurance?
Yes! Although this is a cosmetic procedure, many dental insurance plans will cover some or most of the cost of gum bleaching. However, you should consult your policy to find out whether it is covered.
